Beautiful Neighborhoods and Excellent Schools

With a population of just over 20,000 residents, Millburn is a vibrant, historic community. In the 1830s, the building of the Morris & Essex Railroad sparked interest and growth in Millburn as the railroad regularly traveled through the town while transporting coal from Pennsylvania to New York. Today, Millburn boasts one of the best school systems in the country and conveniently sits on the Midtown Direct train line. The bustling downtown has world-class cuisine and is punctuated by idyllic Taylor Park where residents can be seen enjoying the pond, trails, baseball diamond and playground. Just a short walk from the downtown sits the famous Paper Mill Playhouse with Broadway-quality shows and the charming Carriage House restaurant. Although the tree-lined streets and beautiful neighborhoods offer an enviable retreat after a busy day, there is always something to do for the residents of Millburn whether it be the local farmer's market, the annual Snowflake Parade or fun-filled summer street fairs.

Parents looking for excellent schools will find some of the best New Jersey has to offer in the Millburn Township Public School system. There are five elementary schools that offer grades K-4, Washington School for the consolidated district 5th grade, a middle school, and Millburn High School. In the most recent U.S. News & World Report High School rankings, Millburn High School was ranked 18th within New Jersey and #418 in the nation. Seventy percent of high school students participate in Advanced Placement (AP) exams, and Millburn High School also ranked #105 in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) High School category.

The most recent niche.com Best Public Schools survey gave the individual schools in Millburn an A+ rating. This particular survey includes reviews from students who comment on many aspects of student life. There are a large array of athletic options during fall, winter and spring sessions as well as a variety of extracurricular activities.

Commuting To and From Millburn

Merely 20 miles outside of New York City and with convenient access via the Midtown Direct train line, Millburn is an ideal town for families looking to settle within close proximity to the City. Direct trains on the Morris & Essex line take residents from Millburn to New York Penn Station in under 45 minutes. Near the train station, there are Municipal Train and business parking lots with applications available at the Town Hall Tax Collectors office.

For commuters that drive or carpool to work, Millburn has easy access to several major highways including NJ-24 and I-78. Another excellent option for those that are New York-bound is New Jersey Transit with bus routes between Millburn and Newark Penn Station.

Parks & Recreation

Taylor Park sits in the heart of the downtown. The Taylor Park Pond is home to the Annual Fishing Derby and the park grounds are the location for the annual 4th of July festivities, both highly anticipated community events. Complete with walking paths, baseball and softball fields, and a popular playground, the park has something for everyone. The Bauer Community Center on the Taylor Park grounds has a full calendar of events that include exercise classes, games, and a lecture series. For older residents, there is a Friday Friends bagged lunch series with guest speakers, bingo, and special entertainment events.  

Beyond the parks, the township of Millburn has an enviable array of facilities for residents to enjoy. There is a large town pool, Par 3 golf course, and tennis courts. A local favorite, the President's Night Cup running race, winds through the streets of the downtown every June. Residents also have access to Gero Park which is located in the enclave of Short Hills. Gero Park is adjacent to youth league baseball fields, basketball courts, and a popular playground. 

Around Town

Downtown Millburn has an excellent selection of world-class cuisine. One of the trendiest restaurants is Common Lot, but for foodies, there are many places from which to choose. Just off Main Street is Moonshine Supper Club and in the other direction an excellent coal-fired pizza restaurant. In the summer, there is a farmer's market on Tuesday mornings with fresh fruits, vegetables, and sundry items and gifts. In the center of town is the local movie theater, a popular destination on the weekends, and after the movie, residents can stroll to Coffee Mill Roasters, a micro-roaster, that feels like a New York-style coffee bar or the Häagen Dazs Ice Cream Shop on Millburn Avenue. 

The town of Millburn is nationally known for the Paper Mill Playhouse which offers season after season of Broadway-quality, family-friendly theater. The Carriage House restaurant nearby is a great spot for a bite to eat before the show, and the beautiful courtyard area behind the Playhouse has a lovely pond and rambling stream. In the summer, Taylor Park is host to a free concert series, and families always come out for the annual downtown street fair.
